Prior to interviewing candidates discuss the position with your family and be clear on what your needs are. Take the time to go through their CV to familiarise yourself and be better able to relate to the candidates.
Welcome your potential carer in an open manner. Make them feel comfortable by offering them a drink and introducing them to all the people in the dwelling. Make light conversation and allow for natural conversation throughout the interview. Take this opportunity to truly get to know the candidate as best you can in the time available.
Confirm the job criteria to allow for open discussion on any aspect of the position. Use our ‘Employment Checklist for Families and Carers’ to assist you in covering these areas. It is important for you to know exactly what you want from your carer. This allows both parties to agree on what is expected.
Tell the carer about your family and children including routines, interests, personalities, discipline, allergies, medications and television.
Ask the carer about themselves using open-ended questions. Enquire about their experience, lifestyle, career interests, childhood or anything you feel is important to your family’s needs and interests.
Discuss how you would like to exchange information i.e. formally or informally and whether or not you would like an individual developmental program for your child/ren.

What do you enjoy most about working with children?
What types of activities do you enjoy doing with children?
How would you manage difficult behaviours?
What do you find is the best form of communication between parents and carer on a day-to-day basis?
How do you know if the applicant is the right one for you?
Ensure you feel comfortable in leaving your children in the care of the person. Know what your requirements are and ensure your carer is capable in carrying out these tasks. Ensure he/she interacts well with your child/ren and shows an interest in their wellbeing.
When the interview has finished
You should really feel good about the reasons why the applicant wants to take care of children and specifically your children. Once the interview has been completed, make it clear to the carer what your intentions are i.e. you are still interviewing prospective carers or you are keen to employ that candidate.
